Starting any business can be a daunting feat, but I'm here to demystify some of that process for you! I'm sharing 8 insights and tips into starting your own fashion business from scratch.. As a veteran of the fashion industry who went on to found her own label, I've picked up a few tricks and learned a few lessons.
In this week's video, I'll be covering topics from manufacturing top marketing (and everything in between) all while baking my focaccia bread.
Take a peek at my video for more in depth information.
1. DETERMINE YOUR NICHE
Fashion encompasses so much variety. You can make clothing and accessories for anybody. While I think that this variety is what makes fashion so fun and exciting, it can be overwhelming. Sit down and do some soul searching, and really dig into what motivates you as an individual, and let that lead your direction.
2. YOUR BRAND VALUES
Brands are more than just what you sell. These days, consumers are smart and informed. They want to shop with brands that align with their values. How do you want to treat your employees? What kind of messaging do you want to support? What causes speak to you?
3. YOUR BRAND NAME
A brand name is what people will know you for. Choose carefully and ask yourself what you really want to say with your brand name. What kind of feelings do you want to evoke?
4. JUST GET STARTED
You can plan all you want, but action is what will catapult you to the next step. Don't overthink it or doubt yourself. You'll grow and learn as you take action, and each step will build upon itself.
5. CHOOSING A MAUFACTURER
Manufacturers do more than just make your product. They're really partners in making your dream come true. Ask yourself what your deal-breakers are. Is it quality? Price point? Working conditions. Make a list and refer to it often. Watch the video to hear about how I actually got in touch with my manufacturers.
6. SELLING YOUR PRODUCT
At the end of the day, you're running a business and you need to profit from your products. Figure out what your goals are, and what capabilities you have. Watch the video to learn about two different methods of selling your product.
7. MARKETING YOUR BRAND
There are so many ways to get the word out. There is no wrong way, but authenticity is key. Ask yourself what your goals are, and where your customers are most likely to receive their news. Watch the video for examples of how you can market your brand.
8. FLEXIBILITY
At the end of the day, life happens! Stay flexible, and learn to roll with the punches. The fun of fashion is that it's always changing!
